PRC "Hard to Recycle" collection dates announced

The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department, Colcom Foundation and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA are providing an opportunity for area residents to properly dispose of a wide variety of materials at four "hard to recycle" collection events in 2011.

At the upcoming events, individuals can drop off televisions, e-waste, cell phones, printer/toner cartridges, compact fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries and tires without rims for recycling.

The event dates and locations are as follows:

Route 19 and Race Track Road, Washington County

Saturday, June 11

The Mall at Robinson
100 Robinson Centre Drive, Robinson Township

Saturday, July 16 (Event flyer)

Pittsburgh Brashear High School
590 Crane Avenue, Pittsburgh

Saturday, Sept. 17
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills
590 Pittsburgh Mills Circle, Tarentum

Most items are collected for free ?- including the introduction of televisions and computers in 2011. Participant fees for tires, batteries and misc. e-waste are posted on the PRC Zero Waste Pittsburgh website.

"Our list of items collected at no cost continues to grow each year, and we?re excited to offer free disposal of televisions and computer CPU, monitors, mice and keyboards in 2011," according to PRC Regional Director Dave Mazza. "We accept many items at no cost, including cell phones, compact fluorescent bulbs and in and toner cartridges at no cost to participants."

A new partnership with Off the Floor Pittsburgh will enable individuals to drop off useable furniture such as dressers and beds at PRC collection events at no cost. Off the Floor then distributes the materials to local low-income families in need of furnishings. Visit the Off the Floor Pittsburgh website for more details concerning acceptable items.

"PRC supports the practice of 'reduce, reuse, recycle' so we?re excited to expand the focus on 'hard to recycle' collections to also include items meant for reuse," said Mazza. "Two years ago we established a very successful partnership with Global Links to collect medical equipment and supplies at our events, and last year we began working with Construction Junction to collect usable building material."

At all 2011 collection events, individuals can drop off the following materials for reuse at no cost: medical equipment and supplies (such as crutches, nebulizers and wheelchairs) for distribution through Global Links; usable building materials (such as light fixtures, doors and windows) for resale by Construction Junction; and gently used furniture (such as beds, dressers, tables and chairs) for distribution by Off The Floor.

The 2011 campaign is presented by PRC?s Zero Waste Pittsburgh project in partnership with Allegheny County Health Department, Colcom Foundation, eLoop llc, Liberty Tire Recycling, Global Links, Construction Junction, Off the Floor Pittsburgh and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
