Our mission

Our mission is to inspire people throughout the city and region to collect litter and connect neighborhoods.

This year's spring Great PA Cleanup event will be BIG

From signups we are getting directly and registration on the Great PA Cleanup website, it looks like there will be record numbers of litter and beautification events this spring in Pittsburgh and the counties of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland in March, April and May. Most of the projects will occur in April but organizers are not restricted to the suggested Redd Up weekend of April 15, 16 and 17. Events will be taking place all over.

This year Earth Day will be observed on Friday, April 22 and Arbor Day is on Friday, April 29.

We are projecting 400 to 500 events, upwards of 20,000 to 25,000 volunteers recruited by local event coordinators, who will collect an estimated 450 to 500 tons of litter and other stuff.

Some of the projects are: Duquesne University's Spiritan Ministry where hundreds of student volunteers collect litter on the South Side, Uptown and Hill District neighborhoods, many Allegheny CleanWays illegal dumpsite and tire cleanups in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, the annual Mt. Washington hillside cleanup by the Explorer Club, Monroeville's 19th annual Jack Sedlak Memorial cleanup by as many as 500 volunteers, the 9th annual Greater Ligonier Valley cleanup and the 8th annual Latrobe corridor cleanup.

Need help locating a place to volunteer?

With Citizens Against Litter's updated database, we have been successful often putting volunteer hopefuls in touch with community litter leaders. We probably can help you, too. Contact Boris Weinstein at 412-688-9120 or

Troy Hill, other Northsiders are stepping up

This comes to us from the Troy Hill Citizens Christmas and New Year's message:

As you may have noticed over these last six months, volunteers have been 'redding up' our Troy Hill neighborhood by picking up litter and cleaning illegal dumpsites on and around our community, assisting with an ongoing project called ONE CLEAN NORTHSIDE. Way to go folks!

Allegheny CleanWays and the Pennsylvania Resource Council plan on continuing and growing these projects with programs for volunteers to help keeping Troy Hill and the Northside litter free with initiatives such as the Beautification and Stewardship for 2016. Please visit for more information for volunteering and helping keeping our neighborhoods clean.

More information and particulars will be posted as this program continues to be organized for 2016.

Additionally, Samantha Weaver of Allegheny CleanWays compiled a survey for a preliminary educational anti-litter project called The Litter Letter. Sam is looking for feedback on whether this type of project is something our community would want to be a part of.

Also continuing in 2016, ACW, and PCR will again be working on distributing recycling bins to residents of Pittsburgh's Northside. Please contact Samantha Weaver at or 412-381-1301 for more information on the free recycle bin program.

4th annual Connoquenessing Creek cleanup

From the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance:

The new year is a time to reflect upon the past. Allegheny Aquatic Alliance is proud to announce that our 4th Annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup was the most successful cleanup yet! We removed almost 59,000 pounds of garbage, including 700 tires from just 12 miles of this important waterway! This brings our overall total of removed garbage to 202,560 pounds of garbage, including over 2,000 tires from 32 miles of Connoquenessing Creek! We never expected to remove so much trash from just one local creek and none of this would have been possible without your support! Thank you for contributing to a cleaner, more natural waterway. This year, the 5th Annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup will focus on Butler and Beaver Counties as the section will begin around Zelienople and extend 10 miles into Beaver County. Please consider helping out again this year!

Allegheny CleanWays 2015 results

Some of the Allegheny CleanWays highlights of the work in 2015 reported at year-end:

Report mailbox graffiti

Pittsburgh Postal Service invites citizens to be proactive and call the Postal Service at 412-359-7845 to report mailbox tagging or boxes in need of repair. Help the postal service by giving them specific information of locations and crossing streets.

"I Litter" awards

Advertising and promotional materials turn into litter in Shadyside and elsewhere. Businesses and sometimes nonprofits are often responsible when they put their business on Shadyside streets. There's less of this going on. January's top litterer continues to be the Post-Gazette Sunday Extra free advertising circular.

Shadyside Garbagevilles

Garbagevilles are houses, buildings, streets and places that are a mess. Some because of litter; some because of unswept leaves; some because of trash and junk on their property. Some because garbage cans sit in the front of their houses. Many because of the absence of lids on garbage cans and open waste containers. Some of these Garbagevilles in Shadyside are always a mess. This is an incomplete list of course.

Important phone numbers

Need to contact the city about something that's been bothering you, like potholes and graffiti? Call the 311 Response line (alternate number is 412-255-2621). Your request will be logged and sent to the proper department. Want to contact someone directly? The following list may help.

One cup at a time

On one of the coldest days of last month, a middle aged Squirrel Hill woman was seen picking up an empty drinking cup from the street. Doesn't sound like much but when did you last pick up litter from the street or sidewalk? One person picking up one piece of litter is a start.

The last word

Remember. Rome wasn't redd up in a day either.
